2010 Season
Our Senior A team won both the Western Bay Championships and Baywide Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and was runner-up in both competitions in 2008. This team was unbeaten for three and a half seasons – going unbeaten in 79 matches.
Matt Welsh has always been involved with rugby in College he played rugby for St Johns 1st xv for 4 years and was a Waikato Secondary Schools representative.
He then moved to club rugby from 1966 to 1977 with Hamilton Marist Seniors, Hamilton Sub-union rep and Waikato rep. He played 27 games for Waikato, including 3 Ranfurly Shield challenges and 2 Internationals versus Fiji and Romania. He was also a reserve for Waikato vs. British Lions in 1971. He was nominated for All Black trials in 1974 and 1975, was selected in North Island Marist rep team in 1971, 1974 and 1975. He played for Waikato Colts from 1968 to 1971 and played for Waikato colts in the curtain-raiser vs. Auckland colts at Eden Park in 1971 before the All Blacks vs. Lions 4th test. He represented all Waikato rep teams from Sec schools to Waikato NPC before he turned 20 years old.
Matt has also been on the Mount rugby committee since 1998. He has coached with Mike Furey at colts level in 1995, 1996 and on his own in 1997 and 1998, then became club delegate on Western Bay sub-union. Also a delegate to BOPRU Council of delegates and then elected to Western Bay board. He is now a member on Bay Rugby committee, Judiciary and draws committees and Baywide committee.
Matt was back coaching in 2005, 2006 and 2008. Undefeated in 71 competition games and 2 Baywide titles.
