The Mount Maunganui Rugby Club has been an integral part of the Mount Maunganui community and Bay of Plenty rugby landscape since its inception in 1923. Current player numbers are in excess of 400 from our barefoot junior boys teams through to Baywide Premier Team.
The Mount Maunganui Rugby Club is recognised as one of the flagship clubs within the Bay of Plenty having enjoyed regular success with good results throughout both junior and senior teams.
The Club each season fields around 12 junior rugby teams, a Premier, Senior A, Colts, Presidents and Golden Oldies Teams.
The Mount Rugby Club has also fielded a women’s team in recent seasons that has competed in a Baywide competition with an enthusiastic following.
The Mount Rugby Club hosts an annual Sevens tournament each Auckland Anniversary weekend attracting teams from throughout the North Island attracting between 24 and 32 teams annually.
The Mount Maunganui Rugby Club has had numerous representative players with five of the Premier players being in the Bay of Plenty Steamers during the 2008 season and 3 players in the 2009 season along with several other players making the Bay Development and Bay of Plenty Under 20 teams .
A total of 90 Mount Maunganui players have represented Bay of Plenty with several competing. There have been a number of players in Super Rugby, NZ Colts, NZ Maori's as well as three All Blacks being Frank Shelford in 1985, Kevin Senio in 2005 and recently Mike Delany having his first cap in 2009. Also former Mount Maunganui player and representative Scott Robinson making the All Blacks on his transfer to Canterbury.
There has also been other New Zealand and North Island Age Group Players and several former players are enjoying professional contracts in both Japan and Europe.
Junior rugby is a feature of the Mount Maunganui Rugby Club with strong player numbers and the support of a hard working and enthusiastic group of parents and helpers.
